Eiffel Tower Closed After Staff Strike Over Allegations Female Workers Were Sidelined for Visiting Group

The Eiffel Tower was forced to close its doors to tourists on Monday after monument employees launched a strike to protest allegations that female colleagues were ordered to step aside during a visit by a Hindu delegation over the weekend.

The labor action followed a Saturday tour of the French capital's landmark by roughly 100 members representing the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, an international Hindu organization headquartered in Ahmedabad, India.

Union representatives expressed profound outrage over the management's actions during the delegation's tour. Diane Davoine, a union representative speaking on behalf of the Eiffel Tower staff, explained that female employees were specifically directed to leave their regular work stations so that male personnel could take their places. Davoine stated that the directive was perceived as deeply humiliating by the workforce, particularly by the female staff members who were displaced.

The site's operating authority, the Eiffel Tower Operating Company (SETE), acknowledged that the visiting group had requested arrangements that would limit interactions with female staff members during the tour. According to French media reports, SETE admitted that agreeing to such discriminatory conditions was a mistake and that the request should never have been accepted by management.

The controversy quickly reached senior government and municipal officials in Paris. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire announced that an administrative investigation had been initiated into the handling of the visit. Grégoire declared that such arrangements were entirely intolerable, emphasizing that neither his personal convictions nor the values of the Eiffel Tower could support a system where workers and visitors are separated on the basis of sex rather than being allowed to operate freely and equally.

The incident drew further rebuke from the national administration. Aurore Bergé, France’s Minister for Gender Equality and the Fight Against Discrimination, strongly condemned the alleged actions at the landmark as unacceptable. She stated publicly that gender equality remains an absolute, non-negotiable principle under French law that cannot be compromised or tailored to accommodate special exceptions.

The staff walkout touched upon deeply held principles in France, a country characterized by a robust tradition of feminist advocacy and a long-standing constitutional devotion to secularism tracing back to the French Revolution. Over several generations, French civil rights and feminist movements have campaigned for women's voting rights, reproductive autonomy, and comprehensive workplace equality, culminating in France becoming the first nation in the world to constitutionally protect abortion rights in 2024.

In a formal statement released on social media, BAPS addressed the escalating controversy by stating that it was taking the concerns very seriously. The organization explained that the weekend visit had been planned in close coordination with the Eiffel Tower's operational management at the start of standard operating hours in an effort to minimize any potential disruption to other monument visitors.

While the group's initial public response did not explicitly refer to the redeployment of female staff members, BAPS maintained that to its knowledge no individual had been barred from entering the landmark. The organization nonetheless extended a sincere apology for any distress or inconvenience that the episode may have caused to employees or the public.

In a supplementary statement provided by its Paris chapter, BAPS vigorously rejected the characterization of the visit's logistical arrangements as discriminatory. The chapter asserted that the request was never intended to be rooted in gender distinctions and stressed that any insinuation of gender bias directly contradicted the foundational values of the fellowship and the touring delegation.

The organization further stated that it remains steadfast in its dedication to the ideals of universal equality, mutual dignity, and selfless service to all people regardless of their gender, background, or religious beliefs, noting that these tenets form the core of its global spiritual mission.

BAPS describes its entity as a volunteer-driven, spiritual fellowship dedicated to advancing personal moral development, social service, and values of global harmony and faith. The group's presence in France was tied to major organizational milestones over the weekend, including the formal inauguration of a new Hindu temple in Paris on Sunday.

The Paris temple opening capped a series of large-scale events that brought thousands of devotees to France. These activities included an extensive boat procession along the River Seine involving more than 5,500 international participants, as well as a celebratory street procession in the eastern Paris suburb of Bussy-Saint-Georges that was led by women and girls of all ages.

The organization is widely recognized for constructing massive, ornate stone temples around the globe, such as the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey—the largest Hindu temple in the United States—as well as major landmark temple complexes in the United Arab Emirates.

The monument's closure and the resulting political furor generated widespread media coverage in India. Commentators on social networks questioned why the Eiffel Tower’s administration had agreed to sideline female personnel in the first place, with several observers lamenting that the controversy threatened to damage the international reputation of both the faith and the country abroad.
