A 13-year-old schoolboy from Hertfordshire has officially stepped into the recording booth to make his voice-acting debut as the world-famous locomotive Thomas the Tank Engine in a brand-new animated television project.
Harry Sparkes, who lives in Harpenden, has secured the lead vocal performance in the upcoming production titled Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories. The ambitious new series pairs the young newcomer with an internationally recognized Hollywood star as the creative team prepares to introduce the beloved blue engine to a fresh era of viewers.
For the young teenager, securing the iconic role required an impressive exercise in discretion and discipline. Over a span of nine consecutive months, Sparkes routinely traveled to weekly studio recording sessions without alerting any of his peers at school to his emerging voice-over career.
In order to keep the high-profile media commitment hidden from his classmates, Sparkes devised a convincing cover story. Whenever he needed an explanation for his regular schedule disruptions and weekly absences, he informed his fellow pupils that he was attending routine physiotherapy appointments to rehabilitate a foot injury.
Reflecting on his journey from an ordinary student to the central character of an internationally renowned entertainment property, Sparkes described the entire experience as surreal. He noted that stepping into the recording booth brought his personal childhood memories full circle after years of engaging with the classic franchise.
The young actor shared his enthusiasm for the transition, observing how remarkable it felt to embody a figure that had formed such a staple part of his early life. He remarked that it felt amazing because he had actively played with the toys and watched Thomas as a child, adding that it felt completely insane to now be given the opportunity to actually voice Thomas.
Sparkes acknowledged that his school friends would likely experience a tremendous sense of shock once the truth of his recording work was publicly revealed. Beyond the initial surprise among his peers, the teenager emphasized how meaningful it was to contribute to a production that upcoming generations of children will grow up watching on their screens.
Working alongside Sparkes on the production is celebrated feature film actor Henry Golding. The screen star, widely recognized for his prominent roles in blockbuster releases such as Crazy Rich Asians, as well as the 2019 films Last Christmas and The Gentlemen, lends his vocal talents to the series as its central narrator.
The role of narrator carries substantial prestige within the long-running franchise, having originally achieved fame through the distinct storytelling delivery of music icon Sir Ringo Starr. Golding also follows in the footsteps of other notable performers who have guided viewers along the tracks, including Pierce Brosnan, who served as narrator for the 2008 feature-length special Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery.
Addressing his responsibilities as the narrative anchor of the project, Golding acknowledged the profound heritage of the position, remarking that he felt as though he was standing in the shadow of giants by following celebrated predecessors such as Sir Ringo and Brosnan into the recording studio.
Golding expressed confidence in the fresh direction of the animated adaptation, noting that the production team aims to deliver a modern dynamic to the familiar world. He stated his belief that the cast and crew are bringing a new spin and a distinct level of excitement to Thomas, explaining that modernizing the property for the current era represented the most thrilling aspect of the undertaking.
The literary foundations of the character date back nearly eight decades to 1945, when the locomotive first appeared in the pages of The Railway Series, originally authored by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Since those early published books, the stories centered around the bustling railway network have expanded into a cornerstone of global children's entertainment.
Franchise owner Mattel confirmed that the new venture marks a visual return to 3D animation for the characters. The company teased that the production will present audiences with a revitalized depiction of the Island of Sodor, while intentionally preserving and celebrating the traditional railway adventures that enthusiasts have cherished since the franchise debuted in print in 1945.
Audiences will not have to wait long to experience the latest interpretation of the classic franchise across multiple digital and streaming formats. Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories is scheduled to make its premiere on the official Thomas & Friends YouTube channel on 17 September, followed by a wider streaming debut on Netflix on 30 September, ahead of a full series broadcast launch slated for early 2027.
