Russian Bombardments Kill Eight in Ukraine as Vladimir Putin Warns West Against Deploying Troops

A wave of Russian aerial bombardments struck communities across Ukraine, leaving at least eight civilians dead and dozens more injured in a series of destructive attacks. The lethal strikes unfolded against the backdrop of escalating rhetoric from Moscow, where Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning against any potential deployment of European forces to Ukrainian territory.

The casualties occurred across several different regions, according to reports from Ukrainian municipal and regional leaders. In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, an overnight attack involving Russian drones hit a residential neighborhood. Ivan Fedorov, the regional head, confirmed that two residents were killed in the strike and one other person sustained injuries as emergency personnel responded to the scene.

Further devastation was reported in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih. Local administrative authorities confirmed that Russian strikes in the area claimed the life of one person and left three others wounded, underscoring the ongoing danger posed to urban centers far from the immediate frontline.

The southern port city of Odesa and its surrounding districts were targeted in what regional governor Oleh Kiper described as a massive overnight assault. The barrage left 35 people wounded and inflicted heavy physical destruction on civilian infrastructure. Among the hit structures was a multi-story residential building, where the uppermost floors were completely shattered by the impact.

Fatal attacks continued into Saturday in other parts of the country. In the city of Kramatorsk, located within Ukraine's partially occupied Donetsk region, three people lost their lives when incoming drones struck civilian automobiles. In a separate strike in the Zhytomyr region, two individuals were killed when a Russian attack struck a local grocery store, pushing the overall civilian death toll from the recent wave of strikes to eight.

In response to ongoing Russian aggression, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces had carried out retaliatory long-range operations against industrial targets inside Russia. Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian strikes successfully hit two chemical manufacturing facilities located in the Russian regions of Samara and Perm.

Although the regional governors of Samara and Perm did not immediately release official statements regarding the Ukrainian claims, Astra, an independent Russian online news outlet, confirmed that drone strikes had indeed targeted chemical industrial facilities in both administrative regions.

The intensified military actions coincided with severe political warnings delivered by President Putin during the summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies held in New Delhi, India. Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the international gathering, Putin cautioned European capitals against considering any direct military involvement in Ukraine, explicitly stating that such an action would trigger direct warfare with Russia.

"Now they're talking about how they're considering sending troops into Ukraine. That means a war with Russia," Putin warned. His remarks followed discussions among select European leaders regarding potential commitments to a future peacekeeping contingent, an arrangement that Moscow has repeatedly rejected as entirely unacceptable.

Despite his stark warnings concerning European military involvement, Putin dismissed suggestions that Russia poses a broader security danger to the continent. He told reporters that Russia has never presented such a danger and reiterated that his government does not threaten, nor intend to threaten, European nations.

However, European leaders expressed growing concern over rising security challenges along Ukraine's borders. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that two recent incidents near the borders of Poland and Moldova should be interpreted as an advance indicator of intensified Russian provocations targeting border crossing points between Ukraine and Europe.

Tusk highlighted an attack on Tuesday night in which Russian drones hit the Starokozache border crossing connecting Ukraine and Moldova, resulting in two deaths. He added that a direct threat against a Polish-Ukrainian border crossing point on Wednesday night was narrowly prevented due to rapid, close security coordination between authorities in Warsaw and Kyiv.

Amid the escalating hostilities and strong rhetoric, questions surrounding potential diplomatic engagements continued to circulate. In an interview with Deutsche Welle published on Saturday, President Zelenskyy expressed a willingness to meet directly with Putin if both heads of state were invited to attend the upcoming Group of 20 summit scheduled for December in Miami.

The Kremlin responded cautiously to the prospect of an international encounter. Yuri Ushakov, a foreign policy adviser to the Russian president, stated that the issue of Putin attending the Miami G20 summit had not yet been formally reviewed or discussed by officials in Moscow.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated the Russian government's long-standing position on Saturday, noting that if the Ukrainian president genuinely desires a personal meeting with Putin, he could travel directly to Moscow. The Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly rejected any proposals to hold talks in the Russian capital.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed on Saturday that Moscow maintains readiness for negotiations, even as heavy combat and retaliatory strikes continue to inflict casualties and heighten tensions across the region.
