Iran President Acknowledges Economic Struggles Amidst U.S. Economic Pressure and Strain on Hormuz Control

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly acknowledged the severe economic challenges his nation is facing due to U.S. economic sanctions and naval blockades, while also expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of Iran's military capabilities. The remarks come amidst heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where the U.S. is working to weaken Iran's control over the crucial energy chokepoint.

In a recent interview with state media, Pezeshkian candidly admitted, "We have many problems," including soaring inflation, economic instability, employment issues, and numerous other challenges. The president emphasized that despite these difficulties, the Iranian people are standing united with their government. Inflation has skyrocketed above 80%, with prices of certain food staples increasing by 100%. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Iran's economy will shrink by 6.1% this year, marking the worst contraction in decades.

Pezeshkian, who is considered a relative moderate within the Iranian regime, also criticized Iran's hardliners who reject negotiations with the U.S. and favor a continued military confrontation. He stated that Iran's military capabilities, including missiles and bombs, are of "no use" and are not a viable solution to the country's economic woes.

The U.S. has been imposing stringent economic sanctions on Iran, which have effectively choked off the country's trade. The naval blockade has not only restricted Iran's ability to export oil through its ports but has also prevented the import of refined fuels, despite Iran being a major oil producer. This has led to widespread shortages and long lines at gas stations, compounded by deep subsidies that encourage excessive consumption.

In response to the economic pressure, Pezeshkian explained that efforts are being made to curb fuel demand and increase prices, but these measures cannot go too far. "We shouldn't make someone whose life revolves around gasoline suffer," he said. "We shouldn't put more pressure on those who are already under pressure. People are on the edge now; if I put more pressure on them, they might fall off the edge. We have to be careful that no one falls off."

Iran's trade has plummeted by 25%-35%, with imports dropping significantly more than exports. According to trade intelligence firm Kpler, Iran's August crude export loadings have collapsed by more than 80% compared to a year ago. The U.S. military has also been actively working to redirect commercial vessels, disable ships, and board others to ensure compliance with the sanctions.

While the U.S. tightens its economic grip on Iran, it is also attempting to loosen Tehran's control over the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, Central Command announced that U.S. forces had cleared sea mines from the strait's international shipping routes, allowing for increased oil exports through alternative routes, particularly along Oman's coast.

Estimates suggest that around 15 million to 16 million barrels of crude oil and oil products are being exported from the region each day, with around 70% of pre-war levels of oil flows from the Persian Gulf. U.S. officials have revealed that approximately 10 million barrels of oil are being transported out of the Strait of Hormuz through the Omani corridor, which the U.S. military is actively defending.

Despite continued attacks on ships by Iran, the country has not been able to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military has also conducted a series of bombings in recent weeks, aimed at degrading Iran's radar and maritime surveillance systems, thereby facilitating the passage of tankers through the strait at night without detection.
