William and Catherine Surprise Kevin Sinfield on Day Three of Final MND Endurance Challenge

The Prince and Princess of Wales made an unannounced appearance in West Yorkshire on Tuesday to back Sir Kevin Sinfield, the former rugby league international who is midway through what he has described as his last major fundraising feat for Motor Neurone Disease charities.

William and Catherine met Sir Kevin in Wakefield as he pressed on with the third day of an undertaking that will see him run seven ultramarathons in as many days, tracing a route between Hull and Manchester. The couple's visit was not publicised in advance, and images released afterwards showed the pair chatting with the runner, who appeared to be taking the encounter in his stride despite the physical toll of the week.

Catherine was captured on camera telling Sir Kevin that his efforts were "so inspiring" and praising "the unity that you're building" through the challenge. William, for his part, offered a note of encouragement with a practical edge, urging him to "make sure you hold yourself together for another few days." Sir Kevin, according to the account of the meeting, responded that he had spent much of the day daydreaming about an ice bath — a telling indication of the strain the repeated long-distance runs are placing on his body.

The royal couple's involvement goes beyond moral support. They made a private donation to the fundraising effort, a gesture that reflects a relationship with Sir Kevin's campaign that stretches back several years rather than a one-off photo opportunity.

That relationship was formed in large part through Sir Kevin's friendship with Rob Burrow, his former Leeds Rhinos teammate, whose diagnosis with MND in 2019 and death in June 2024 transformed the pair into the public face of efforts to fund research and care. Their campaigning and running challenges have together raised more than £11m for MND causes since the first event in 2020.

The personal dimension was evident in William's decision in January 2024 to present both men with their CBEs at the Leeds Rhinos ground in Headingley — an unusual step that took an honours ceremony out of the palace and into the sporting community that had shaped them. When Burrow died six months later at the age of 41, William was among those who paid public tribute, underlining how closely the family had followed the campaign.

Before meeting Sir Kevin on Tuesday, the prince and princess spent time with families living with the consequences of MND, hearing first-hand how money raised through the various challenges has fed into support and research. Such encounters have become a recurring feature of the couple's engagements, allowing them to draw attention to conditions that remain without a cure and to the often invisible burden carried by carers.

Earlier in the day, William and Catherine visited the home ground of the Leeds Rhinos, where they met young players and learned about the work of the club's charitable foundation. The foundation supports health, education and well-being projects across the Leeds area, extending the club's reach well beyond the rugby pitch.

Jamie Jones-Buchanan, a former teammate of Burrow's, was on hand to explain the ethos that has sustained the club through both triumph and hardship. He described an environment in which success and adversity were met in the same way — with the group emerging "on the other side together" — a philosophy that has clearly informed the response of the rugby league community to Burrow's illness.

Sir Kevin's current undertaking is scheduled to conclude on Saturday at Old Trafford in Manchester, where he will arrive ahead of the Super League Grand Final, one of the showpiece occasions of the British rugby league calendar. The setting is fitting: a stadium synonymous with the sport's biggest moments will host the final steps of a challenge designed to keep MND in the public eye.

His week has already drawn attention from other members of the royal family. On Monday, Princess Anne met Sir Kevin at the University of York during the second day of the run, offering her own characteristically dry endorsement. She remarked that the phrase "fun run" struck her as a contradiction, adding that while she can still run, she no longer does so for enjoyment — she was, she said, "past that stage."

The accumulation of royal attention in a single week is unusual for any charitable initiative, let alone one rooted in rugby league, a sport that has often complained of being overlooked by the national establishment. Sir Kevin's knighthood, awarded this year, was among the first conferred on a rugby league player, and it followed long-standing accusations that the honours system had treated the sport with a degree of snobbery.

That argument was given further weight — and then partly answered — in June 2025, when Sir Billy Boston became a rugby league knight, the first in the sport's 130-year history. The honours, taken together with the visits by William, Catherine and Anne, suggest a shift in how the sport and its charitable figures are regarded at the highest levels.

For Sir Kevin himself, the emphasis remains on the finish line and the money still to be raised. Having described this as his final fundraising challenge, he is seeking to close out his running career on his own terms, with the cause that has defined his post-playing life front and centre.

The coming days will test whether he can complete the remaining ultramarathons and reach Manchester as planned. The presence of two senior royals at the roadside in Wakefield, however, has already ensured that the message he carries — about a disease that kills hundreds of people in the UK each year and about the community that has rallied around one of its own — has travelled a good deal further than his own footsteps.
